Our Story

Our Story

We first met in August 2018. I was with a mutual friend, Javier, when we walked past “The Bricks”, a building at Northwest. He introduced me to his family group, and as we were all chatting, Tyler noticed me and assumed I was dating Javier. I had to clear that up quickly—yes, I was single, and no, I wasn’t looking for a relationship at the time.

But as the month went on, we grew closer. Tyler’s energy and sense of humor helped bring me out of my shell. When his birthday rolled around, there was a football game and an after-party. I told him I wasn’t going, but ended up going with my friend Zycuria. Tyler spotted me in the crowd and playfully called me out for "lying" to him. That night, we danced together—and from then on, something just clicked.

At that point, we still hadn’t made anything official. We didn’t even have each other’s phone numbers yet—we were still chatting through Snapchat. Eventually, he asked for my number, and we started talking more and more. We had this fun little game of seeing who would fall asleep first on FaceTime (I always won). We’d spend hours on the phone, even waking up the next morning still connected. We did everything together—from late-night Walmart runs with friends to just walking back to our dorms.

I’ll never forget the night he asked, “Oh, so I can’t get a hug?” as we said goodbye. I looked back and said, “You didn’t ask for one.” Of course, I went back to give him that hug.

By September, we started spending more intentional time together—just the two of us. We’d sit in the car talking for hours, meet up at the Roc (the outdoor recreation area), and I’d watch him play basketball at the Sweatbox (Campus Gym)

. We’d trail each other home from campus, not even realizing we only lived four minutes apart. It felt like a scene from a love song—he’d take the left off the Victoria exit, and I’d go right.

We made our relationship official on September 15th. Three days later, we shared our first kiss. And on September 24th, I told him “I love you” for the first time.

Looking back, it feels like fate was always guiding us toward each other. We had unknowingly crossed paths so many times—we both went to Byhalia Middle School, our families already knew each other, and I lived just one house down from his Aunt Quita during high school. He even went to the same church as my grandmother, a place I’d visited often—yet somehow, we never met until the perfect moment.
